Rehoming Your Pet

While we understand this is generally not an easy thing; we know at times it is necessary for both the family AND the pet.  Below you will find some helpful information and resources on rehoming your pet.

Tips for Posting on Rehoming Sites

  1. Write a Profile: Give a brief, yet honest description of your pet's personality and behaviors (both good things and the challenges). Give current information on age, size, if they are spayed or neutered and if they are up to date on vaccinations. Have copies of any vet records.
  2. Take a Photo: Photos are always helpful! To take a good photo to rehome your pet, ensure he or she is looking at the camera. The background should be simple. Try to get a shot where people can get an idea of how big your pet is. Videos are great too.
  3. REMEMBER: You should be comfortable with any answers. If you get a bad feeling, believe it! Remember, you can ALWAYS say no if you don't feel it is a good match.

Questions to ask a potential adopter

When you have a potential adopter, you should make sure to verify who they are and ask the following questions:

  • Have you had pets before?
  • What kind of pets have they had?
  • If so, what happened to them?
  • Why are they interested in these pets
  • If they have kids? (make sure the fit is good with the pet)
  • You should also ask about vet care for former pets - asking about whether they are looking for indoor or outdoor pets, etc.
  • Feel free to ask for vet reference information.  This usually helps to determine what kind of pet owner they are.
  • Ask for a re-homing fee.  If you don't want the money, donate it somewhere, but this helps to ensure people are serious.
